Many students at our school enjoy sharing myths and rumors they hear from older friends who went to RIS. Some of these stories are funny, some strange, and others are just hard to believe.
One popular rumor is about the school building itself.
“I heard there was a pool on the roof,” said Martin O’Brien, a sixth grader. Even though no one has seen it, the story has been passed down for years.
Teachers are also part of several school myths.
“I heard that Mr. Gerckens is a North Face model,” says 8th-grader Ava Banks.
Another story is from Eli Susman, 8th grade: “Mr. Chiera was a famous boxer.” This wasn’t a surprise for many students who had never heard that before.
The drama class has one of the scariest rumors. Students believe the theater is haunted, especially when it is dark and empty, and these spirits watch our school plays and musicals. Adding to the mystery is the idea that Mr. Losco might live under the stage during performance weeks, said Tomas Tao, which made many students laugh.
Some rumors start from real events.
“The lockers were zip-tied because they found a dead mouse in them,” said Luke Hansen, explaining why students were confused that day.
Even lunch has its own myth. Students in Mrs. Shepherd’s 7th-period class have a joke that “the pizza is radioactive,” even though it tastes delicious.
Although most of these stories are not true, they show how quickly rumors can spread at school. Whether funny or strange, school myths are something students love to talk about.
