AI plays a big role in the world today. AI is a term for artificial intelligence and a lot of people use it for hard, or simple everyday life tasks. There is a lot of controversy about AI and how useful it is and how it affects the world. AI is advancing and lots of people believe it will have the ability to take over most jobs in the world. Some people use AI everyday without realizing it. Companies like Google use sources of artificial intelligence to provide answers to its users, and there is an average of 8.5 to 13.7 billion google searches worldwide per day. AI has become more common in the modern day, and has been proven to advance even more in the future.
AI has a big effect on the environment. Whenever artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT or Gemini are being used, it uses water and energy to power and cool massive data centers, which wastes lots of water and energy. The TikTok viral AI series Fruit Love Island used an average of 8 gallons of water per episode. A 5-second AI-generated video can consume as much electricity as it takes to power a microwave for one hour. One of AI’s latest abilities is to make people who aren’t real look real. Producers are using AI to make people who aren’t actually there, appear like they are in movies. For example, a movie is being created starring Val Kilmer. Val Kilmer was an actor who passed away last year. However, AI images of him are being created in order to make it look like he is physically in the movie. AI is also affecting medical discoveries for people dealing with paralysis. The recently discovered treatment is putting artificial intelligence in the brain to help people function more, in body parts like the hands or feet. Many RIS students including Ian Zaninovic and Lucas Cohen were asked how often they used AI, and both replied everyday. They said they find AI very useful and helpful, and it saves time because it works fast.
More RIS students including 8th graders Gillian Vega and David Martinez were asked if they think AI will take over jobs and if so, how. David Martinez stated it is definitely possible for AI to take over jobs, however not all jobs because being a pro athlete is a job AI could not mimic or recreate. Gillian Vega agreed and she believes it would be possible for AI to take over jobs, but like David said, not certain jobs like athletes. Some jobs like software engineers or financial analysts need AI. However, some people who don’t need AI are using it and it is now becoming far overused. AI usage has doubled over the past year and globally nearly 90% of companies now report regular AI use in at least one business function. 8th grade students Capri Esposito and Brenna Wearly believe AI will continue to advance a lot in the future and be able to sound exactly like a human and make it past all AI detectors. As AI continues to advance, students across the world have been using it very frequently. Schools across the U.S. have begun to ban tools like ChatGPT on school chromebooks to help prevent students from using it when they aren’t supposed to. Students were using ChatGPT to complete their homework or create essays, which led to bans. The bans are to ensure the students’ work is really theirs. If students rely on AI too much, they won’t be able to live on their own or think for themselves. Schools have been working against AI and schools including Roosevelt Intermediate School.
In conclusion, AI’s advancing power and effect on the world increases every day. Most of AI’s effects on the environment and the world are negative, but its ability to help people physically can be life saving in the long run. AI has lots of pros and cons that are difficult to weigh out, however, the future of this technology depends on how humans decide to use it.
