Advisory has been a program at Roosevelt for years now but does it actually help? We interviewed kids across all grade levels and asked them about it to see if advisory was actually helping students or if it was just an unnecessary bother on a Thursday morning. 6th grader Casey Buchalter said that it “Didnt help” and that he thinks its not useful. He said that he would rather it just be removed all together. 8th grader Miles Cohen was also quoted saying “It takes away time from learning” countless other students have also said the same thing such as 8th grader Liam Manahan who said “The advice is good but he already does most of the things” that it preaches in his everyday life. 7th graders Matthew and Burna also said that it’s a waste of time, Matthew also said that “It hasnt really happened”. Some students such as 8th graders Pranav Nair, Charlie Stein, Bennett Coroza, and Victor Chung said that “It’s good because it shortons class periods” Pranav Nair went as far as saying “ I like it because I get to play games instead of doing work”. From the opposing view point Mr. Rosenthal said that “I have taught advisory before” and that “Advisory is a good break from the academic rigor for students” when asked if they are helpful he said “The content of the lessons matter but in general it is very helpful”. Overall it seems that students and teachers are in a divide. Students in general dislike advisory, most saying that they would rather get rid of it. The question is if all the students dont find it helpful and want to get rid of it, why do we still have advisory? We asked guidance counselor Mrs. Sabba for more information. She said that “I worked on making the last advisory lesson and have helped teach it before”. When asked about the usefulness of advisory she responded “It can be very helpful depending on the lesson, especially for 8th graders going into a new school”. As for advisory changing Mrs Sabba said that “Its been in the talks of ways to change advisory to make it better for the kids”. As for cutting it out entirely it is not possible because advisory is a district mandated program.
