Over the past couple of months, the school has banned countless websites and has even gone as far as banning Chromebooks in the lunch study. The question is why? Why is the school banning all these websites, and why did they get rid of Chromebooks in lunch study altogether? We asked 7th grader Geo Depietro about the recent bans, who said that video games can “Help me focus. It also helps me not get overwhelmed with schoolwork, especially when it’s hard” We also asked 8th grade student Nick Rissitto who said that “It was unfair Banning websites and the alt counts because we should have a time to play games especially like lunch study if we’re already doing schoolwork, homework, projects, and tests” Mrs helwig a 7th grade ELA and a 8th grade journalism teacher said that “games are super distracting.
Some websites certainly need to be banned. Kids ‘ brains are not fully developed so they often make the mistake of going on different websites and making dumb decisions and not paying attention to school”. But this still doesn’t explain why Chromebooks should be banned during recess. Overall, the school is taking away most of our freedom on our chromebooks, we can’t even have backgrounds on them. Are backgrounds that much of a problem that we need to ban them?
We should have more freedom; we are not in elementary school anymore, we are responsible enough to set our own backgrounds. People are complaining that they can’t even do their homework anymore in recess, and we aren’t even allowed to do schoolwork anymore. These aren’t even privileges. Doing homework is a requirement for school, and it should be optional for students. Teachers want us to do our homework, and yet they ban us from doing it? In conclusion, many students are unhappy with these recent changes, and teachers are refusing to change them.
