Westfield’s journey to the Group Four State Championship was nothing short of remarkable. The team’s season was defined by extraordinary teamwork, perseverance, and a drive to succeed that set them apart from their competitors. Under the guidance of Coach Alex Schmidt and his entire staff, including Mrs. Helwig and Mrs. Giaccio from right here at Roosevelt, the team showcased their talent and flexibility throughout the season.
Their path to the championship was paved with hard-fought victories, including a critical rematch against Elizabeth, avenging their sole loss of the season. In that game, Westfield displayed their offensive power, scoring four goals while only allowing one. The 4-1 triumph over Elizabeth was a turning point, boosting the team’s confidence heading into the playoffs.
The state final against Eastern was the peak of their efforts. Played in front of a packed stadium buzzing with energy, the match tested the team’s determination. The game remained deadlocked for much of the contest, with both teams showing superb defensive organization and goalkeeping. However, it was Westfield’s star sophomore striker Emilie Cadigan who rose to the occasion. Her perfectly timed run and exceptional finish in the 78th minute capped off a textbook counterattack, igniting celebrations among the Westfield faithful.
Westfield’s defense, anchored by junior captain and goalkeeper Sofia Buoscio, was impenetrable in the late moments of the match. Buoscio made a series of crucial saves throughout the tournament, earning her recognition as one of the top players in the state. Additionally, the team’s defensive line, led by juniors Callie Schmidt and Olivia DeGregorio, Andia Janota and senior captain Erin Hazard worked perfectly to counteract all Eastern’s attempts to equalize.
This victory marked Westfield’s second state championship in three years, adding to their 2021 triumph against Freehold. That historic win, clinched with just eight seconds remaining, still resonates with the team and its supporters. Westfield’s legacy of late-game scoring and will to win continues to define their program.
Ranked third in New Jersey, behind Rutgers Prep and Shawnee, and 10th nationally, Westfield has cemented its reputation as a powerhouse in high school soccer. The team’s remarkable 20-1 record this season speaks to their consistency and determination. With young talents like Emilie Cadigan emerging as future stars and a solid foundation of experienced players, Westfield’s prospects for continued success look bright.
This championship season will be remembered not only for the trophy, but for the memories created, and the spirit of a team that refused to give up.
