Donald J. Trump has been elected as the 47th President of the United States for a second, non-consecutive term, the first time this has happened since Grover Cleveland in 1893.
Democrat candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris was beaten as Republicans won a majority in the House and Senate, making it significantly easier for republican lawmakers to pass their will.
This comes as a decrease in voting turnout of around one percent occurred nationwide, with a strong showing from Republicans.
As well as being the first Republican to win the popular vote since George W. Bush in 2004.
According to The Hill, Americans have stated that winning the popular vote as a Republican is extremely hard to do, even 45th President Donald J. Trump has said this to the public in a press conference.
During Trump’s interview with The Hill, he explained to the public that since the democratic candidate always has New York, Illinois, and California which are the three big states it’s hard to win the popular vote as a Republican.
Out of the 7 major swing states likely to determine the election, those being Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona.
Donald Trump managed to win all seven states, helping to secure his victory with 50% of the popular vote compared to Harris’ 48%.
The U.S. election is determined by the amount of electoral votes each state has and who receives more, this system is called the electoral college.
According to Jed Belosa, “The electoral college is the voting system where each state has a different amount of points depending on the state’s population. If a candidate wins a state those points will be given to the winning candidate. 270 points are needed to win the election.”
Although Donald Trump won all seven swing states, the most important state election came down to who won Pennsylvania, which had the largest amount of electoral votes for a swing state (19).
Winning 312 electoral votes of the electoral college compared to Harris’ 226, securing the election.
With Republicans likely to crack down on illegal immigration, plans to try to lower taxes and cut inflation, while allowing the economy to continue to heal following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Polls conducted by Scripps News show that 54% of American voters supported mass deportation of illegal immigrants prior to the presidential election.
While nearly 9 out of ten democrats and 52% of republicans say they support a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
According to The Daily Press and other corroborating sources, “In one New York election in 1844, 55,000 votes were recorded even though there were only 41,000 eligible voters.” Where did all the people come from?
While potential voter fraud of the past has all but been ignored, claims by republicans after a Trump defeat in 2020 has resurfaced this issue once thought dead.
Taylor Morris, an 8th grader gave her opinion on potential voter fraud in recent elections and stated, “I was not surprised at all (with election results) as I knew that Trump would make sure there would be no election fraud due to added election security where they were counting the votes in each state so there could not be a chance to count any possibly incorrectly tallied votes.”
While varied opinions on this year’s election are rising by both the left and right, this year’s election will continue to be another source of controversy on a long list in United States history.
